This colonial tea plantation bungalow is situated a few kilometres outside Haputale (the access road is accessible with care by saloon
cars). The bungalow is at an elevation of about 4500 ft. where the climate is
crisp and cooling throughout the year, and is known as a popular health resort.
This breathtaking bungalow has seven
beautiful bedrooms, with antique wooden furniture. Three rooms have a fire
place, with an impressive smoking room and an exclusive sitting room with a
fire place, along with a dinning area and verandah.
There are four toilets, with bath
tubs, and hot and cold water. To add splendour there is a fresh water
swimming pool in the garden, wherein the water is taken from the mountain
spring.
The bungalow has a well maintained
garden with terraced lawns and colourful plants, where you could spot several
species of birds as the Pita Rathmalle jungle is in
close proximity.

dining room, garden and a viewing platform. You can use the swimming pool of
the hotel closely.
The Farr Inn at Horton Plains
…known in better times as a
very convenient guesthouse on this remote and elevated leopard – populated plateau,
has unfortunately closed. In
2005 the building was being converted into a National Park visitor centre,
presumably without accommodation – a great loss to the islands tourists. The
good news is, that I tested the new access road up to
the plains from Ohiya station in an ordinary saloon
car, and made it with ease despite some difficult gradients at the top
(switching off the aircon helps a lot with these). But
beware the turnoff just beyond the roadside shrine, and signposted to a
waterfall and a “tea garden” – this is definitely still for 4x4s only. And the
road from Farr Inn towards Nuwara Eliya
has some very large traffic calmers which will scrape
the exhaust off a low-slung car – therefore this access direction cannot be
recommended for such vehicles.
